De oorspronkelijke garnizoenskerk uit 1751 deed dienst als kerk voor de in Nieuweschans gelegerde militairen.
Opmerkelijk detail is de stafbank of arrestantenbank met deurtje en slot. Gestrafte millitairen konden zo toch een kerkdienst konden bijwonen maar niet zomaar de kerkbank af lopen.
